I can really only speak for Catholicism, but I know much of the time, Catholic doctrine on salvation is misunderstood. It is thought that Catholics believe "good works = salvation". That was denounced as heresy a long time ago (prior to the Reformation), and I seem to have lost my Western Civilization notes from last semester in which we discussed that. (Note: This is a Protestant school.) I was not brought up as a strict Catholic, but consider myself one, and it is my understanding that Catholics basically say "Through good works, you will come into faith in Christ," while Protestants go the other way around: "Through faith in Christ, you come into good works." And as my roommate and I discussed last night (he's a Protestant, though I'm not sure of what denomination (he's not Calvinist, I know that)), it's not particularly relevant how you go about it, just so long as you DO wind up with faith in Christ.

I think a lot of the "Catholics are dangerous" rhetoric comes out of the large doses of ritual found within the Church, and the role of priests in the faith. Frankly, I'm not entirely sure why that would matter a whole lot, so long as one has faith in Christ. I know it's often thought that we participate in idol worship with the veneration of the saints (uh, we don't), and that none of us bother to form personal relationships with God (uh, we do), instead relying on priests. I'm not entirely certain that that is what the Roman Catholic Church actually stands for.
