Oops, my apologies! I had forgotten completely about your post, and it WAS quite good.

I think the point you make with your moving the mule analogy is a good one, though. The point is to move the mule, and the question is "Which motive is better at moving the mule?" The answer, it seems, would be "Depends on the mule". From that perspective, neither motive is "better" on any kind of absolute scale. Of course, if one disagrees that the purpose is to move the mule, then this answer may change.
