Oscar Nominations Game: Missed Opportunities

They say to trust your initial instincts. I could have learned from that. My entry in the Oscar Nominations Game has all kinds of missed opportunities, because I second guessed myself at the last minute.

I would have had a perfect score in the Best Picture category, except that I swapped The Pianist out for About Schmidt at the last minute.

Ditto the Best Actor category, except that I swapped out Nicolas Cage for Richard Gere at the last minute.

As cynical as I am about the Academy, both of these errors of mine were because I underestimated the Academy. I figured Richard Gere would be nominated just because of the movie he was in, and that Cage would get shafted because of the movie *he* was in.

I did manage a perfect score in Best Actress. I haven't checked yet, but I'm betting nobody nailed Best Director. Another Academy stupidity, albeit one that stems from unfortunate practical concerns, is that Pedro Almodovar's Talk To Her was nominated for Best Director but could not secure a Best Foreign Language Film nomination because it was ineligible. Why? Because only one candidate per country is allowed in that category, and Almodovar's native country of Spain submitted another film for consideration instead.

I'll have more thoughts later, but I close with this one: if Spiderman wins Best Visual Effects, I will scream.
