Oh. I thought maybe "manipulative" was referring to the way the screenplay "adapted" so many details of Nash's life [read: tidied it up for a neater, tamer, more accessible story]. Incidentally, if his affairs with students and leaving his wife and such had been left in, it might've made more the kind of film you described as Oscar-worthy. But it might have been a bit to real to be entertainment for some.
