Gladiator had absolutely terrible special effects. The colliseum was bad, but the tigers were what I thought of to pick on.

Uh, you're quoting something I never said. The problem with Spiderman was that the CGI was unconvincing, not that it was "clearly CGI." Most, though not all, of the shots of Spiderman in action looked weightless. He didn't move in a convincing manner. I can accept that a superhero can leap tall buildings with a single bound and cling to walls, but I can't accept that forces are not countered by equal and opposite reactions, or that acceleration due to gravity varies according to the whims of animators. When I see a shot of Tobey Maguire, silhouetted in blurry blue and engulfed in a different pattern of shadows than his environment, and he bounds through the air in a trajectory unrelated to laws of momentum, and the course of his flight has no bearing on the position of his body, this is more than enough to throw me out of the movie's hold. There is utterly no suspense to most of the action scenes simply because it's readily apparent that Spiderman can move however he needs to to get the job done.

To clarify, though, I like the movie. The unusual strength of the story, particularly with the Peter Parker parts, was more than engaging enough to entertain me. I just thought the visual effects were poor enough to damage the impact of the movie.

Unlike Gladiator, which I pretty much hated in all aspects.
