Last year was richer for animated films, and they kept it to three. This year was the driest in recent memory, and it's five. I agree that Treasure Planet was probably the fifth nominee for lack of better alternatives, but, honestly, I'd have figured The Wild Thornberrys sooner, as this year's inexplicable Jimmy Neutron nomination.
I'm thinking they wanted five here to make the category appear like a real Academy Award category. This year, with the exception of Makeup and Sound Editing, all the normal categories have five nominees.
But what I really don't understand is why this genre has it's own category. It's like saying an animated movie (or a non-English movie) cannot be the best movie of the year, solely because the movie features animation. If they continue with the Animated Feature Film award route, shouldn't there also be Best Comedy Picture, Best Drama Picture, and Best Action Picture awards?
