"Insert Witty Comment Here"

The time-honored tradition of signing one's name with a quotation inside it at the end of one's post is something that I've always appreciated about the RinkForum. It's a small thing, really, but it's one of the many small things that make RinkWorks such a nice place to be. I don't know if this tradition is unique to this forum or not, since I have not been active on many message boards; this is the only place I have ever seen it done. Participating in the tradition helps one feel a sense of belonging to the community.

However, I am a firm believer in NOT doing something just because "everyone else is doing it." I use the quotes-in-name signoff frequently, but putting things like "insert witty comment here" or "can't think of anything to write here" is something I will NEVER do again. Why waste the space? When I don't have anything appropriate to insert there, I'll just sign my name, or maybe not use a signoff at all. I generally just sign my name if I've written a serious post anyway, because I don't want to detract from something I've just said with any silliness.

I am of the opinion that there is a time and a place for everything. Of course, in the end, I suppose this post might just come across as Grishny ranting about something that bugs him. I'm certainly not targeting anyone in particular; just a trend that I've seen ever since I've been posting here. I may have been guilty of it myself! It only now occurred to me to say something about it.

Gri"does this post make any sense to anyone, or am I just being a nit-picking goob?"shny
