Interesting take. I took immediate joy when the in-name quote thing started happening, because it *was* something unique to this place. Yet I think it was a year and a half after that before I actually did it myself. Still, I tend not to do it, but once in a while I find an actual rhetorical purpose for an in-name quote. It's a chance to get a final word in as an aside without stealing thunder from the special impact the last line of a post has.

But though I may not use them much myself, like I say, I take pleasure in the fact that people here do use them. And like you, I think it's unfortunate when in-name quotes are placeholders instead of purposeful. There's enough stuff to read here.
