Personally, I use in-name quotes in a lot of my posts, but not always. And yes, I think that a few times I have signed off with something similar to "I have no idea what to put here". However, my in-name quotes, even if they don't really say anything, tend to have a purpose, as I use diffent signoffs depending on how I'm feeling as I write the post (though until I thought about what you said, I was doing it automatically). Here are the diffent ways that I tend to sign off:

1) If I write a silly post, I tend to sign off with a VERY silly in-name quote.

2) If I write a serious post about almost any topic (including serious debates about topics), I try to end off with a more throughtful in-name quote or perhaps a question for the reader to think about. This tends to be the type of post that I respond to the most (and possibly the hardest to come up with really good 'final words' to put into the quote).

3) If I write a dead serious post about anything personal and not-so-good, either as a post concerning things that aren't so good in my life or as a reply an attempt to help someone who had a bit of trouble themselves, I always sign off with no quote; in this situation I find that an in-name quote would only distract from what I have to say, and might be espessially counterproductive if it was silly.

So, with these three points in mind, the reason that I put quotes like "insert witty comment here" in a post is simply so that I don't end off with my 'dead serious' style. Of course, I'm sure that the actual content of the message has a LOT more to do with the responses recieved then the last quote thingy does, but I still try to be consistant.
