They look incredibly scary because you're going *fast*, but after the first time you choke down the terror and drive onto one, you find they're *much* easier than normal roads where you have intersections, lights, vehicles turning all over the place, pedestrians ... the list goes on. On a freeway all you need to do is keep the car pointed in a straight line.

> Um, this isn't a good rule to follow. Going as slow as you can is not safe if you're traveling significantly slower than the posted limit. Cars can come up behind you very quickly, and it's hazardous if you're driving a lot slower than they are anticipating. Although I can't vouch for the whole United States, I believe you can get cited for driving too slowly in most states (including California and New Hampshire).

All right, I was assuming a speed in the vicinity of the posted limit(under) to 15 mph over.

> In addition, it's also a bad idea to speed up just because a car behind you is getting too close. This is known as tailgating, and most people do it because they want you to drive faster. The faster you drive, the faster they will drive, and then you've accomplished nothing other than breaking the law. Speeding is one thing (that I'm often guilty of), but if you're doing it out of pressure, that's a bad thing to do. You can get cited for speeding, and the "But, officer, HE made me do it!" argument won't work.

Okay, and if all lanes are filled with this kind of driver and you can't get off the road?
