The "everyone hails the plane" ending was the original ending.

The alternate version sees Jim dying after the Major puts a bullet in him (there's all the stuff where Selena tries to save him in the hospital, but he dies anyway). At the end, Selena and Hannah wave to the plane, but there's no Jim. There's also a monologue from Selena about "the need to procreate" but it pulls back to reveal that she's addressing a chicken.

Personally, during the original ending, I was waiting for the plane to make a second pass and open fire...
