I personally see nothing wrong with getting strongly involved in fictions, as long as we can ultimately distinguish between fiction and reality. To me it's a way of broadening our experience. Getting strongly emotionally involved with a story can radically change the way you understand yourself and the world around you. I don't understand why we should hold ourselves back from an experience that has the potential to change us and allow us to learn and grow.

When you were finally allowed those equal rights and some measure of acceptance and recognition, wouldn't you feel strongly too? (I do not intend to get into an argument here about whether it was "morally" right for gay marriage to be legalized in Massachusetts, by the way. I think it's a wonderful thing, and I'm sure that there are some people on the board who disagree with me, but I've had this sort of discussion a million times and quite frankly I'm getting tired of it. I'm just trying to point out why people might have been crying.)

quite, i did not intend to say that feeling emotion was bad, the comment you quoted meant that i feel that people rely to much on television and characters on television for how they should react to life situations. and the response they get from tv (and most other media to be sure) is to behave emotionally unstable and to look to others for solutions to all problem. hence, the katrina debauchery that took place in houston. no one even attempted to fix thier own plight, but merely looked to the government for money, housing, etc.. even when offered irrationally high-paying jobs to rebuild New Orleans they refused, opting for the easier way out: to sit on thier asses and wait for a government check in houston.

Whoa, tangent tangent tangent. Anyway, i was merely saying that society, in general, has no independance and seeks to idolize outstanding people (keyword people, like everyone else) because they don't know where else to place their reverance. Everyone is capable of greatness, but its easier to praise someone elses achievements. The fact that actors are paid such astronomical amounts is an obvious sign that people feel they need someone to simulate and execute situations in life in order to know how to respond emotionally.

as for homosexuality and the morality of such, i would rather not engage in a debate.
