Crying-- a question for the science-y people

I just noticed this.

As I imagine is common experience, when I'm very upset and have a good long cry, I come out of it feeling a unique kind of quietness. I assume most people know what I'm talking about, so I won't elaborate on the feeling anymore. What I find odd is that the feeling often comes even after I've been crying for completely unemotional reasons-- as when I've been chopping onions, for example. Before I realized this, I attributed the post-crying calm to some kind of emotional release. But now I'm wondering if there's some kind of biological effect that produces that feeling after the shedding of tears. Anyone know anything about this?
