I don't think there would be enough hormone released to affect such a calm, though of course I know little about it.
I think one of the causes is psycho-physiological; you feel calm or better after you cry as sort of a "reward" by the brain. For example, when you stifle a yawn it's not so "fulfilling" or good as when you let yourself yawn.
