Meaning that they are an "official" part of the Star Wars universe. Authors who want to write a Star Wars novel have to make sure their books don't contradict or conflict with any of the other novels that have been written, and their story ideas must be approved, or so I've heard. Any movies taking place after RotJ would have to jive with those books, wouldn't they?

Lucas took the books out of canon when production started on The Phantom Menace. This allowed him to ignore all the books set before A New Hope and rewrite history as he saw fit. This would also apply to those books set after the films, too.
