It works by generation. From one couple comes first siblings. Their kids are 1st cousins. The children of the 1st cousins are now second cousins, having the same great-grandparents. I'll try an illustration.

----------------------Parents
------------------/-------------\
-----------------/---------------\
-------------Siblings----------Siblings
--------------/---\--------------/---\
----------(Sib. Sib.)---------(Sib. Sib.)
----------1st cousins--------1st cousins
----------/---\--/--\---------/--\-----/--\
------(Sib Sib)(Sib Sib)---(Sib sib)(Sib Sib)
-----(1st cous)(1st cous)-(1st cous)(1st cous)
--------Second Cousins----Second cousins

Trust me. I'm a big "family tree" guy. I like to know who I'm related to and how.

Shan-don't get me started on how you become "removed" from a cousin-dar
