I think, if a soldier only fought in one *battle*, I wouldn't call him (or her) a veteran, even if they were a ranking officer.

I've never understood "Alumnus", either. I understand it's something to do with US schools (and metallurgy?), but beyond that I have no idea.

Hmmm... I still think you would need to have been in more than one film / episode to count as a veteran.

On a related note, does anyone know why they swapped the colours of Command and Operations between the times of Star Trek and TNG? And why are Operations personnel still called "redshirts" even though they're now wearing gold?
