This uninspiring entry in the Charlie Chan series seems to have been written with strict adherence to the successful formula but negligent of the fact that formulas can only serve as groundwork for a story and are not sufficient to produce an entertaining film. All the Charlie Chan staples are here -- mysterious deaths, sneaking around, spooky suspects, dousing lights, and the "help" of one of Chan's spirited sons. But Murder Over New York doesn't make a whole lot of sense, nor is it cohesively held together, and the manner in which the murderer gives himself away was just idiotic of him. It's not irredeemably bad. If you like Charlie Chan films in general, there's probably no reason you won't like this one, but it's one of the poorer representatives of the series as a whole.
