I may be misremembering now, but my recollection of the event is that he didn't even jump it in a "motorcycle" per se. He was in some weird rocket contraption thing, I think he dubbed it a "rocketcycle" even though I recall it looked nothing like a motorcycle. He launched over the canyon in the thing, but the parachute that was meant to deploy to bring him down safely on the other side deployed early, and he ended up drifting down into the canyon itself.
