Before the Internet, we passed around legends by word of mouth. The internet has made if very hard for those of us who like to make up our own facts.
But back to Evel: I watched the Snake River fiasco on live TV. I don't remember the year. Anyway I think there were a couple of motorcycle wheels hidden underneath that rocket somewhere. It was a steam powered rocket and it took off straight up. Somehow, just as it pitched over toward horizonal, the parachute deployed and I thought the blast of steam was going to rip it to shreds. It must have been a good parachute, because it lowered the rocket into the canyon and clanked down on some rocks on the other side. He actually made it across the river but not the whole canyon. I thought I remembered the only injury as a broken arm.
He had talked of jumping the grand canyon, and was denied permission to try, but he was also advised that it was impossible, suicidal, expensive, and not good for his health. He actually consulted with NASA scientists.
OK, Internet reseachers, how did I do? Howard

The Snake River Canyon jump, and a jump over some busses or something. > > Man, how did people ever find anything out before the Internet? > > -- Dave
