After all, waveforms in physics are just as likely to cancel each other out as they are to enhance each other. If you place a microphone too close to a speaker, and you get the feedback squeal... there is a critical distance, a critical volume level, and probably several other factors involved.

Since you mentioned waves that cancel each other, I have to ask if you have heard about the technology that will make the muffler on your car obselete? This gadget listens to the sound that the car makes and then creates a wave that is a mirror image of each sound wave. They cancel out the noise and the car is very quiet. Pedestrians are going to have to be more alert.
