School is starting and the time has come to standardize school zone signage. There should be an electric "when flashing" sign at the beginning of each school zone. There should be an "end school zone" sign at the end of each school zone. Speed limits should all be the same. All "when flashing" signs should be equipt with an On-Off switch which is controlled by someone who knows when school is in session. This person should be held responsible for turning off the "when flashing" sign if school is closed for breaks, teachers' meetings, vacations, snow days, etc. This is too important to be left up to a computer.
Signs that say things like "when school is in session" or "when children are present" should be banned, because who knows? Also signs which say "7:20 a.m. to 8:40 a.m. and 2:40 p.m.to 4:10 p.m. Monday through Friday" should be removed because you will be past them before you finish reading them.
And speed limits should be rigidly enforced.
Do kids walk to school these days? Howard
