I must be a kid, because I don't know any of those people. However:
I freak when I realize that most kids don't remember Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Jane Powell or Frankie Laine.
They never heard of Sam Spade, the Shadow, the Crime Doctor, Fibber McGee, or Amos and Andy.
They see Walter Cronkite on TV and say, "Walter who?"
They never rode in a Studebaker, a Hudson, a Packard, a Crosley or a DeSoto, and wouldn't know how to drive one.
They can't remember when there were no green left turn arrows, or Interstates.
They are too young to remember when telephones had a cord, the numbers were in a circle or the operator said, "Number please."
They never thought of "going to Europe" as a long, long boat ride or NY to LA as two weeks in a car.
They don't remember when you couldn't find Mexican food in every little town.
They don't know about ration stamps, Green Stamps or a 3 cent stamp on a letter.
They never though of a "pocket full of money" as something that would jingle, and 60 miles per hour as breakneck speed.
But they are fortunate to have no memory of "colored sections," working all day for a dollar, and bringing in a bucket of coal before dark.
They look at a picture of air pollution in Pittsburgh in the late '40's and don't believe it's the same town they saw last summer. And that's good.
Thank goodness they can't remember when the river had no fish in it and smelled so bad you couldn't sit on the bank. Howard
