A worrying trend in adverts posted by wintermute on Tuesday, September 4, 2001, at 02:28:09:
> For the last month or so a major supermarket chain has been running adverts focused on the usual "prices dropping down to new levels of amazing cheapness" schtick.
This is shifting the topic just a tad bit, but I feel the urge to rant about how much I hate those obnoxious shouting car dealership radio ads:
I HATE them! Hate 'em, hate 'em, HATE 'EM!!!
These guys raving at top volume about their LOW PRICES and ONE TIME ONLY SALES, screaming at me to HURRY BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE, consistently occupy the top positions in the list of people whose obnoxious ads make me determined *not* to buy their product. I spit on their advertising strategems. *Ptuo*
While I'm ranting, here's another thing: I thought I'd seen the epitome of chest-thumping, testosterone-pumped manly-man truck commercials in that ad that shows some roughneck pounding big ol' fenceposts into the ground while the disembodied narrator talks about what a date movie "You've Got Mail" was, concluding with "You know the movie I'm talking about? Did you see that one? Well, *this* guy didn't!" Yep, they've hit the limit with this one, I thought.
Boy, was *I* wrong.
Now there's a new truck commercial that shows a foundry where various "ingredients" are toppling over the edge of a conveyor belt into a molten die in which the new truck will be cast. In addition to a battleaxe and an anvil, there's a big pair of BRASS BALLS getting dumped into the mix. I would dearly love to see some women make a parody of this commercial, in which the elements of manliness include a beer can, a TV remote, a La-Z-Boy recliner, some dirty socks and underwear, a bottle of Ro-Gain, etc., etc...
And while I'm *still* ranting, what's up with those guys in the razor commercials? Even the Sphinx doesn't have a jaw as solid as those guys. I laughed when some girls I was friends with in college mentioned that they thought a man shaving was a sexy thing. Well, DUH, if your experience of watching men shave is those Gilette ads. The reality of shaving is a lot less titillating, at least in my experience. (See the link below for a funny take on the guys in razor commercials.)
