It was a while ago that I read the series, or at least the first couple...

I highly recommend Dune as a rather brilliant book, but don't subject yourself to the books thereafter... they really aren't worth it, as I recall (althouh I don't think I got past about the third). Although then again, apparently whomsoever I'm replying to is enjoying Dune Messiah so maybe others find them more interesting, but I feel from my experience and many others I know that the first book is the only one worth reading (but it is very worth reading... and I should re-read it sometime).
