'Game of the Ages' update

Whew! That was a close one. Another couple of weeks, and it would have been a year since I last made any progress on 'Game of the Ages' worth updating about. (See the date on the link below.)

There's a good reason, though. Since roughly February, and until roughly July, I was working furiously on a different project for RinkWorks, codenamed Project X. Project X is actually nearer completion than GotA in terms of raw work, but, wouldn't you know it, I got burnt out on it in the last stretch. With the release of "The Mystery of Brackly Hall," I was inspired to take GotA back up again, now that I've recovered from the burn-out I had on THAT project starting approximately a year ago. I figure as long as I'm working on one of the two, I'm ok. Finishing up GotA will be just the break I need from Project X.

At any rate, when last I spoke, GotA was about two thirds done. 68 locations had been completed, but the final third of the game wasn't even designed. Over the last year or so, I've picked away at the design of the last third and, while it's far from complete, it's much more fleshed out than it used to be. The total completed location count is 70, which isn't bad considering I only resumed coding two days ago. At one location per day, not that I think I'll be able to keep that up, the game will be ready for testing in a month and a half. If I get it done in double that, I'll be happy.

The other thing is that those two locations I did are quite complicated ones. Whereas the average code length per location was 4135 bytes, now it is 4270. A total of 298,968 bytes of coding has been completed. Contrast with Fantasy Quest, which has 144 locations, an average code length per location of 1329 bytes, and a total code length of 191,390 bytes.

If all goes well, I'll have a new location written every day for the rest of the week at least. After that, I'll need some time to solidify the design of the remaining portion of the game, so the churning out of code will temporarily slow. I'll post again when I've made another significant amount of progress.
