Ok. That's a bad thing too, which I ecountered repeatedly in elementary school. However, it did burn some of the basics (multiplication, division, basic geometry) in. However, for advanced concepts, I think that you should only have to know the material consiously, and not have to recite it backwarks from memory like you can the multiplication table.
