Well look at it from their point of view. There is this large metal beast sleeping outside all night. Every morning, you get up, are around the house and everything is fine. Then you go outside and the metal beast eats you, growls loudly, and runs away. The animal is alone all day. Later that evening the metal beast returns, still growling, spits you out, and once again goes to sleep. Next day, same thing. This has got to be confusing beyond belief for the pet. Of course they're glad to see you when you get home.
