Game of the Ages - Help Please

I can't figure out how to get Darius off the bed to help me on my quest. I have these items so far:

61 gold coins
armor
preserver
sword
Stone of Strengthening
food rations
dead fish
bucket
rope
portrait
piece of trash
crate

I was going gangbusters and hit a wall. Can you nudge me toward the next step?
