Exactly what productive or useful line of work -- aside from teaching -- does an English degree prepare one for?

As somebody who got his degree in a field of equal impracticality (political science), I am generally OK with the idea that liberal arts and social science degrees are not terribly useful things outside academia. I am OK with this because it's pretty much true.
