Actually, I can explain this by the game's actual words. When a levitation spell is cast, the game clearly states, "You levitate a hair above the ground." Try it in-game, if you don't believe me. Maybe that means that it is a low-power spell that can only levitate just enough to get you a few inches up, thereby passing over any floor triggers. But, if there is no ground, the power of the spell can't hold you up that high, and whammo, down you go. Now, am I a geek, or what? (and don't be afraid to answer yes, I consider myself a geek, and I'm proud of it).
