My job was with the Daily News Journal in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. They had a teletype machine that was supposed to come on at 5:00, but sometimes it didn't, and somebody had to be there to start it manually. I would pull off a few stories for the inside pages and write heads for them and send them out to the shop. Then about 7:00 I go eat breakfast, come back to be sure the teletype was still working and then at 8:00, depending on my class schedule, I'd go to class.

But I also wrote sports, so I often worked ball games that went to 10 o'clock, and much later during tournaments. I sometimes got some straight news assignments during the day, and always worked from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00. Sleep? What's that? I didn't have much of a social life either.
