explained in Episode I, but I think the prophecy was
miniterpreted. The Chosen One will bring balance to the Force.

The Jedi loosely interpreted that as The Chosen One will destroy
the Sith, but they were wrong. At least partially.

I think it's more that, at the end of Episode III, there is balance.

Sidious and Vader
Yoda and Obi-Wan.

Two Sith, Two Jedi.

What else do you want? And of course, Vader does go on to
redeem himself to the light by killing Sidious, thus effectively
destroying the Sith (until Exar Kun comes along and seduces Kyp
Durran to the Dark Side, but that existed only in the books, so
we can let that bit go).

Anyway, just something else to think about.
