Aw heck! I was hoping it was an original composition. But I still like it.

When I was a kid, I made this up:
"How can a brown cow eat green grass and give white milk that makes yellow butter?" You may have heard it before, but not before 1942.

Another one of my original ideas that you may have heard before is the use of "well-oiled machine" to describe a basketball team that works well together. I used it in an article that I wrote when I worked for a small daily paper in the 1950's. The next week, I heard a radio announcer use the expression. I remember thinking that at least one person had read my article. Since then, I have heard it on National TV and I've read it in wire service articles.
