Thursday was market day, and if you didn't go then, you might not get to buy what you needed until Thursday rolled around again. They didn't have shopping malls and only a few stores.
It's in Argentina. Here there is no such thing a garage sale. There are flea markets, though. However, they are not as popular as garage sales seem to be in other countries. People buy stuff in flea markets, but it is unusual for people to offer their own stuff there... I have never been to one, and if I ever had something I did not want to use any more I either gave it to someone in my family or threw it away.
