We have never been south of the equator, but Peru is a possibility next spring. Maybe we can continue on to Argentina. I might want to visit a flea market there.

Argentina is now filled with tourists. It has been like this for the past few years. If you come here you will find yourself feeling pretty rich, being able to afford much more than you would in the US. I cannot imagine anyone having a lot to do in Buenos Aires for too many days (I would imagine that 3-5 days would be enough). However, Argentina has a lot of really beautiful places you can visit, and there is something for everyone, like waterfalls, glaciers, ski resorts, vineyards, deserts, beaches (I would not chose to go there coming from another country, but some may prefer this). So, in short, I think that if you are to come to Argentina, you should visit Buenos Aires but not miss some of the other touristic and "nature-oriented" options...
