Well, it appears I was a bit off. The British-American divide about quotation marks comes from placement of the comma and period.

Vida said, "This is the British version." Note that because I am quoting a sentence, I include the punctuation used in the quoted sentence.

Vida said, "This is the American version". Note here that I do not, even though I am quoting a complete sentence.
