I have a Peruvian son-in-law whose name is spelled "Erick" and his Spanish-speaking friends pronounce it Edrick, I think. > > We call Erick's father "George," but he is really Jorge, pronounced Horhay. I think Spanish is a very interesting language. > For some reason, unlike the Spanish, the Portuguese pronounce most letters as an English speaker would pronounce them. "Jorge" is more or less pronounced "George". The only problem is that the Portuguese don't seem to pronounce vowels, particularly at the end of words. The Brazilians do, but I have yet to master their accent.
So when listening to either Spanish or Portuguese I find myself having to remember a whole sentence, spell it out in my head and plunk in the "missing" letters.
