The back. The joysticks plugged on the side. I think the disk drive plugged in there too.

I think I had about five cartidge games for my C64. Among them were Frogger, Gateway to Apshai, and a racing game called LeMans which I couldn't play because I didn't have a paddle. Most of my games were disk games. My favorites were Maniac Mansion, the Three Stooges, and Arkanoid! I also had Alien Syndrome, which sucked, and a whole bunch of pirated games that our eighth grade computer teacher let us copy.
