I am fairly certain that you can win with ANYTHING, as long as you're willing to keep at it long enough. I'm currently playing my fourth game of MR, and I have only one character in my party. A wizard, and I've not retrained him once, so all he has is the full complement of wizard spells. I'm probably one day's play from winning now. My single character is at something like level 98 and has almost 2000 hit points and about 1500 spell points.
My point is, you don't have to retrain anybody to win the game. It'll just take more time, to build up your characters to a point where they're strong enough to handle the most advanced monsters.

It's possible to win without having any rescue parties. I'm not saying it's *likely* that you'll pull this off, but it's possible. In my current game, I had to create a second character to use as a "rescue party," and I had to use him several times, but this was way back in the beginning on level one, and I must say I was having very bad luck with my main character until I finally got him to the point where he could handle the level 1 monsters without difficulty. Once I got him to that point, however, I simply excersized caution and didn't have to use the "rescue party" ever again.
I'd say it comes down to random chance. In some games, you won't need a rescue party at all. In others, you might need 2 or 3 or even more.
