Agreed. With both reasons you gave. Now, the slightly expanded role she had in film one didn't gall me *too* much, but I'm kind of nervous about film two. If there was anything that could "ruin" the film for me, it would be throwing Arwen in where she doesn't belong. It's one thing to omit or combine characters and events, like replacing Glorfindel with Arwen. Totally different is the explanding of a character and throwing in new events that the author never wrote or intended.
A friend and I were speculating on how Arwen might be involved in The Two Towers, and he pointed out that in the book, Narsil (the broken sword of Elendil) was reforged and renamed Anduril in Imladris, and Aragorn took it with him when the Fellowship set out. He was given a new sheath for it in Lothlorien. All of this was missing from film one. So perhaps Arwen's part will simply be to bring Aragorn his sword, and then WHOOPS gets caught up in the battle? Who knows?
Well, some of you who've already seen the movie do.
