Note: just because you hear it from a parent, doesn't mean it's wrong. His dad is right, and you can verify that practically every half hour on the Hitler, er History Channel, or talk to a WWII veteran, for instance.

Not to say that every medic was a conscientious objector, but during WWII, at least, that is how drafted pacifists were called to serve. The only thing worse than going into combat is going into combat unarmed, which is what medics did. I don't know if that is still the case.
