Unless the whole area is going through a drought, and there are restrictions on water usage, why wouldn't you just get the garden hose out and water when it gets dry? If you're traveling, get the neighbors to do it, and pay them back with fresh produce later on. > > koala"a western gardener's way of thinking"mom
I would have a few minor problems doing that. The garden is almost 200 feet from the nearest water tap. I suppose I could piece together 200 feet of leaky hose, but it would take awhile. That would only reach the lower corner and I would need 200 more to get to the far corner. Also, the garden is 150 X 50 feet and it would take all day to soak it down to a depth of three inches. The water bill would take a heavy hit, and it would need doing again in a few days. I loaded jugs and buckets into the truck and hauled it over there so I could water a few select plants like tomatoes, cabbage, peppers, etc. but watering six rows of corn by this method was just too much. And I am somewhat lazy, especially in hot weather. The easy solution is to hope it rains. And it did. Howard
