Well, I know a little about XP because I have the rip-off version at home. Perhaps your DVD drive needs new drivers because they are outdated for the system. The same is the case for my Scanner when my stepfather went ahead and installed Windows XP when I wasn't even prepared, though I don't see why a CD-rom drive of any kind wouldn't work, but that's just a thought.
