The Fastest Spam in the West

I have just witnessed the quickest attack of e-mail spam I have ever seen.
I am currently at work on an IT helpdesk, one of the duties involved being to test mail accounts by setting them up on a PC prior to the user's PC being profiled with the account. This account was newly created late last night, about 18 hours ago.
When I tested it, it was the first time it had been accessed. The user himself doesn't actually start with the company until the 2nd of January.
Yet...
Aside from the standard "Welcome to the company, these are the e-mail rules" message, there is a spam mail advertising cheap flights on various airlines.
Do these people just randomly type in email addresses based on well known company names and common person's names?
Can anyone beat 18 hours?
