I'm doing a pretty good job of providing my own tech support here, and I am beginning to think that I should just leave this thread alone, but I feel compelled to keep updating it, perhaps in the feeble hope that someone can save me more time by giving me answers to my remaining problems.

I ran regsvr32 -u ws2_32.dll and was told that the DllUnregisterServer entry point could not be found, and that perhaps a corrupt version of the DLL was in memory. I was told to consider using PView to fix it, but I have no idea what that is. My next plan is to boot up in MS-DOS mode or safe mode and see if I can accomplish anything there. I assume that the error I got was a result of having a Win98 DLL on a Win95 machine--perhaps the entry point was changed between versions? In any case, that's where I'm at. I'm sure that as more developments come up, I'll feel compelled to keep you posted.
