I did think that was a very weird spelling coming from an American, but I suppose even Americans can learn to spell correctly sometimes :P

And Sam lived in London for a few years when he was younger (or so he says), so picking up terms like "poor sod" is quite understandable - even assuming it isn't a common term in NH, which it may well be for all I know.
