Yes, I second that Peter F hamilton recommendation. I've just finished the Night's Dawn Trilogy and it is amazing. Read it!!!!

Have you read any Anne McCaffery? Her Pern series is awesome. Also Stephen Baxter and Kim Stanley Robinson.
