Who needs lyrics???

I was reading the posts about movies today, and it got me thinking. Two of the best movies I've seen lately, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Shrek" (and one good one I saw a long time ago: "Titanic"), have shared the same flaw. Each film had a great theme melody that occured throughout the film, and I really enjoyed it. Then (and this literally happened when I saw "Shrek" yesterday) right as the movie ended, I was about to say, "I really liked that melody", when the credits started and there was the melody, with a woman's voice singing these incredibly sappy, inane lyrics. It just ruined the song for me!
Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against lyrics in general, and I happen to love musicals, but there are good ways of putting words to music ( Stephen Sondheim ), and there are bad ways. I mean, I think I could tell that love was important in "Crouching Tiger" without someone bellowing, "I could still find my way/by the light I see in your eyes." And call me crazy, but I much prefer Yo Yo Ma's cello to that woman's voice. Is the general viewing public that narrow-minded that it can't appreciate a movie without a sugary pop song at the end of it?
At least they put the song over the credits, when it's too late to ruin the entire movie.
