I think he does mean it in the way it is intended... I just looked it up at www.dictionary.com to make sure I knew what it meant, and I did, and I think that the only thing that could be disputed here is whether or not there is any intrinsic joy or fulfillment in studying language, and I think there is-- If you're the right sort of person for it. (I think that I am, although it may not show at times.)
